Some Information About First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion, or the Eucharist (capital 'E'), is one of the seven Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is usually planned for children 7 or 8 years old, when the child is old enough to seek and understand what Holy Communion represents. Months and sometimes years of study and preparation lead up to the big event. Children usually wear special fancy dresses and new suits for the occasion.

Holy Communion is the first time in their lives that a child receives the Holy Host, or the Eucharist. Receiving the Eucharist is a big part of being Catholic. First Holy Communion is an event that is celebrated with family and friends, rightly so, because it enables the child to fully become a part of the church. Children not old enough that haven't experienced their First Communion must wait in the pew of the church while others that have participated in their First Communion go to receive the Eucharist at each Catholic Mass.
